A practical introduction to coaching in adult social care — the shift from doing for to doing with. When to coach, mentor or manage, when coaching is the wrong tool, and how to use asking, listening, pausing and the GROW model in everyday care.
What this course covers
- Know when to support, when to step back and when to escalate to keep people safe
- Choose correctly between coaching, mentoring and performance management
- Use open questions, active listening and deliberate pauses in everyday conversations
- Run a structured coaching conversation using the GROW model
- Apply a strengths-based, enabling approach with people who draw on care
Workplace tasks and competency sign-off
This course sets six workplace tasks the manager completes on the job, not just questions to answer on screen. They include diagnosing three real situations as coaching, mentoring, training or performance management, running a conversation in which no solution is offered at all, practising the deliberate pause across five conversations, holding one full GROW conversation, and converting one task currently done for a person into one done with them. Each task states the evidence it produces, and that evidence feeds the Leadership & Management competency sign-off record your employer downloads and a senior signs.
How much does Coaching Skills training cost?
£4 per person on Care2Learn, with no minimum order and no subscription. If your team needs a full training matrix rather than one course, a subscription at £2 per learner per month covers all 32 courses — see the 2026 price comparison.
Who needs it
Registered managers, deputy and aspiring managers, team leaders, senior carers and anyone supporting colleagues to develop. The course also covers coaching people who draw on care, applying the strengths-based approach the Care Act 2014 expects. Completion is recorded with the date taken and the date it is next due, so it appears correctly on your training matrix and can be evidenced at inspection.
What the learner receives
A certificate in their own name carrying the CPD Aligned seal, showing the completion date and the renewal date a year later, downloadable at any time. The record belongs to the learner, not just the employer — it travels with them rather than sitting in one provider's system.

Frequently asked questions
Is this course CPD Aligned?
Yes. The certificate carries the CPD Aligned seal and shows the completion date and the date the training is next due.
How long does Coaching Skills training take?
About 45 minutes for the e‑learning, plus the workplace tasks, which are completed on the job over the following weeks.
What is the difference between coaching and mentoring?
Coaching draws the answer out of someone who already has the capability. Mentoring shares your own experience with someone earlier in their journey. The course also covers when neither is right — when the person needs training they were never given, or when practice is unsafe and needs a clear instruction now.
Does the course cover the GROW model?
Yes, with a worked example and a workplace task that asks you to run a full GROW conversation and record the goal, reality, options and agreed action.
Is coaching appropriate in every situation?
No, and the course is explicit about that. Where there is immediate risk, a safeguarding concern, unsafe practice or someone in crisis, you act and escalate rather than opening a reflective conversation.
