Why some providers still advertise 15 standards
The Care Certificate was revised in March 2025 by Skills for Care, Skills for Health and NHS England. A sixteenth standard was added, covering awareness of learning disability and autism, and the framework was aligned to the new Level 2 Adult Social Care Certificate qualification.
A surprising number of courses on sale in 2026 still describe 15 standards. If you buy one of those, your staff will be missing Standard 16, and an inspector looking at your training matrix will see the gap. It is worth checking the number before you check the price.
What no online course can do
Every provider in the table above sells the knowledge element. None of them can award the Care Certificate on its own, and any that claims to is overstating what e-learning does.
The Care Certificate is only complete once a competent assessor has observed the learner in practice and the registered manager has signed them off. Budget for that assessor time as well as the course fee — it is usually the larger cost.
Cheapest for a whole team, rather than one person
Per-course pricing gets expensive once you are training a team on more than the Care Certificate. A carer typically needs safeguarding, moving and handling, medication awareness, infection control, fire safety and several more, refreshed annually.
At £4 per course with no VAT, twelve courses a year for one carer is £48. On a subscription at £2 per learner per month the same carer costs £24 a year with the full catalogue included, so the maths flips somewhere around six courses per person per year. Watch how subscription pricing is tiered elsewhere. Careskills Academy publishes rates from £6.67 per user per month for 5–10 staff, falling to £2.92 once you reach 101–150 staff. That structure suits large groups and penalises small ones — a six-person domiciliary service pays the top rate. Care2Learn charges £2 per learner per month whatever your size, so for a small provider the difference is roughly threefold: about £480 a year for eight staff against £192.
What to check besides the price
- Does it cover all 16 standards? Several cheap courses are still on the pre-2025 framework.
- Is VAT included? A £20 + VAT course is £24. This matters more in care than in most sectors: because most care services are VAT-exempt, providers generally cannot reclaim VAT on what they buy, so it is a real cost rather than something that washes through. Compare the figure you will actually pay.
- Who owns the certificate? Some platforms only let you download certificates while your subscription is live. A carer's training record should be theirs to keep.
- What does a single extra course cost? Credit prices vary widely — Careskills Academy lists credits from £12.30 per course, against £4 on Care2Learn. If you buy training in ones and twos rather than by subscription, that is the number that matters.
- What happens when guidance changes? Ask whether content updates are included or charged as a new purchase.
- Can you evidence it at inspection? A per-course PDF is not a training matrix. Check you can export completions, expiry dates and gaps for the whole team.
