It assumes Epilepsy Awareness has already been completed — that course covers seizure types, triggers, first aid and when to call 999, and this one covers only what it does not. Completion is recorded with the date taken and the date it is next due, so it appears correctly on your training matrix.
What the learner receives
A certificate in their own name carrying the CPD Aligned seal, showing the completion date and the renewal date, downloadable at any time. The record belongs to the learner, not just the employer — it travels with them rather than sitting in one provider's system.

Does this qualify someone to administer buccal midazolam?
No, and no e-learning course can. Competence requires face-to-face training from an appropriately qualified trainer, a workplace competency assessment, familiarity with the specific individual’s protocol, and your authorisation. This is stated in section 1, repeated later, printed on the certificate, and tested in the assessment — a learner who answers that they are now competent cannot pass, whatever their overall score.
So what is it for?
Two things. It gets your staff to their face-to-face session already understanding seizures, the protocol and the recording, so the clinician’s time is spent on practice rather than background. And it is the annual knowledge refresher between the two-yearly practical updates.
Where do we find the face-to-face training?
We do not deliver it and will not pretend otherwise. The usual routes are your local epilepsy specialist nurse service, your community learning disability team where the person has a learning disability, local epilepsy services through the ICB, or an independent trainer meeting the ESNA trainer criteria.
Does the course contain dose information?
No, deliberately. There is no standard dose of buccal midazolam, no standard waiting time and no standard number of doses — all of it is set out person by person in an individual protocol signed by the prescriber or epilepsy specialist. Printing a generic figure would be dangerous, so the course contains none and teaches learners to read the protocol instead.
Do we still need Epilepsy Awareness as well?
Yes. Everyone supporting someone with epilepsy needs epilepsy awareness training. This course assumes it and builds on it rather than repeating it, which is why it is 45 minutes rather than 75.
