For children's homes & 16–17 supported accommodation

Training for children's homes and supported accommodation

Written for registered and service managers of Ofsted-regulated services

Children's residential services are regulated by Ofsted, not CQC — children's homes under the Children's Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and its Quality Standards, and 16–17 supported accommodation under the 2023 regulations. Both expect staff trained for the risks young people actually face: exploitation, going missing, online harm and self-harm.

Care2Learn's children and young people suite is written for exactly these settings. The starter set below is where most services begin — £3.99 a course, or all 82 courses from £1.99 per learner a month.

Safeguarding that matches the setting

Generic safeguarding training was written for younger children in family settings. Residential and supported accommodation work needs more: Contextual Safeguarding (the risks that live outside the front door), Child Criminal Exploitation & County Lines, Child Sexual Exploitation, Missing from Care and Online Safety. Each is a full course, because each is a full subject — and because Regulation 44 visitors and inspectors ask about them by name.

Relationships are the intervention

The Quality Standards are built on relational practice. Trauma-Informed Practice & ACEs explains the behaviour; Effective Key Working turns keyworker sessions into recorded, purposeful work; Risk Assessment & Safety Planning with Young People makes plans with young people rather than about them; and Professional Boundaries & Safer Working Practice keeps the adults safe to be around. Self-Harm & Suicide Awareness is core, not optional, for this age group.

The starter set for residential childcare staff

Twelve courses most services assign to every new starter. Add Medication Support: 16–17 Supported Accommodation where young people manage their own medication, and Safer Recruitment and Managing Allegations for managers.

Pay as you go, this starter set is 12 credits × £3.99 = £47.88 per carer, with no subscription and no minimum order. Or put the whole team on a subscription from £1.99 per learner a month and every course in the catalogue is included.

The table is generated from the live catalogue, so lengths and CPD statuses are always current. Every certificate is issued in the learner's own name and can be checked by anyone at verify a certificate.

A note on frameworks

This suite is written to the English framework — Ofsted regulation, the 2015 and 2023 regulations and Working Together to Safeguard Children 2023. Services in Scotland and Wales work under their own inspectorates and guidance, and course wording adapts where the platform supports it; see our mandatory training guide for how the frameworks differ.

Where e-learning fits

Residential childcare has a qualification spine that e-learning does not replace: care staff work towards the Level 3 Diploma for Residential Childcare within two years of starting, and registered managers hold or work towards the Level 5. What e-learning does is put the knowledge in place from day one — a new starter can hold safeguarding, missing-from-care and online-safety training in their first week rather than their first term — and keep it refreshed on a cycle your workforce development plan can defend. Completions land on the matrix with renewal dates, so the Regulation 44 visitor's standing question — is the team's training current? — has a one-page answer every month, and a keyworker moving from your home to your supported accommodation service keeps every certificate they have earned.

Evidence for your Ofsted inspection

The matrix shows each staff member against each course with completion and renewal dates, chases are automatic and audit-trailed, and the training report downloads as a PDF or CSV — the Workforce section of a full inspection answered in one export. Certificates are issued in each person's own name and stay verifiable when staff move on. See pricing for size-band rates.
