For residential & nursing homes

Care home training for residential and nursing teams

Written for registered managers of CQC-regulated care homes

A care home trains more roles than any other care setting — carers, nurses, kitchen and domestic staff, maintenance, activities and night teams, all under one roof and one CQC registration. The matrix has to cover every one of them, not just the care staff.

The starter set below is the core most homes assign to every carer, at £3.99 a course pay-as-you-go or from £1.99 per learner a month for all 82 courses.

What a care home matrix has to cover

Everyone in the building, not everyone in a uniform. Fire Safety, Health & Safety, Safeguarding Adults and Infection Prevention & Control apply to kitchen, domestic and maintenance staff as much as to carers — a fire evacuation of people who cannot self-evacuate involves the whole team. Anyone who handles food needs Food Safety & Hygiene; the Food Standards Agency expects it and environmental health officers check it.

The clinical topics that fill residential care. Falls are the most common safety incident in care homes, pressure damage is among the most scrutinised, and poor hydration sits behind both — which is why Falls Prevention, Pressure Ulcer Prevention and Nutrition & Hydration sit in the starter set rather than the extras.

The people you support. Most residents live with dementia, so Dementia Awareness and the Mental Capacity Act (consent, best-interest decisions and DoLS) are core knowledge, and End of Life Care is part of the job, not a speciality.

Pay as you go, this starter set is 14 credits × £3.99 = £55.86 per carer, with no subscription and no minimum order. Or put the whole team on a subscription from £1.99 per learner a month and every course in the catalogue is included.

The table is generated from the live catalogue, so lengths and CPD statuses are always current. Every certificate is issued in the learner's own name and can be checked by anyone at verify a certificate.

Nights, seniors and the kitchen

Night staff need the same core, plus Basic Life Support confidence when they are the senior person awake. Seniors who give medicines add Controlled Drugs where the home holds Schedule 2 opioids, and Sepsis & Recognising Deterioration turns "she seems off today" into a structured escalation. New starters work through the Care Certificate in their first 12 weeks.

Planning the training year

Turnover is the enemy of a tidy matrix. Every joiner starts a fresh 12-month clock on every course, so within a year a home's renewals are scattered across every month of the calendar — and a spreadsheet stops being able to answer "who is due next month?". Care2Learn answers it continuously: the matrix shows what expires next, reminders go out before anything lapses, and the account owner can set a course to a 24- or 36-month cycle where your policy allows it, instead of defaulting everything to yearly. Records imported from a previous provider keep their original dates, marked with their source, so a home that switches to Care2Learn mid-year does not restart everyone's training on day one.

Evidence for your CQC inspection

The matrix shows every active member of staff against every course — valid, expiring, expired or not started — and the compliance report downloads with your CQC number on it. Competency sign-offs for hands-on topics such as Moving & Handling are recorded against the course, and certificates are issued in each carer's own name so they survive staff turnover. See pricing for size-band rates; charities and Care England members get 10% off.
